Live Dylan: Dallas 2008

date: 2008-02-21

location: House Of Blues, Dallas TX

boblink: http://boblinks.com/022108s.html

opener: Leopard Skin Pillbox Hat

personal favorites played: umm… I don’t have “Working Man’s Blues #2″ anywhere else… “High Water” is evolving into a kind of creepy arrangement that could be good once they’re comfortable with it.

Bob factor: He seems almost playful, with a sing-song element to his lyrics. This is good, because it distracts from the fact that his voice is extremely gruff.

performance: The new band features two guitarists plus another hand to play all the non-rock instruments (banjo, pedal steel, mandolin, etc) that Bob likes to feature when possible. Denny Freeman is not only a fairly boring lead guitarist, but also the possessor of what may be the ugliest web presence not hosted on MySpace. I’m being too harsh, I suppose. His playing is distinctive, it’s just not very intersting.

recording: Pretty muddy and run-of-the-mill.

highlights: A nice performance of “It Ain’t Me, Babe.”

lowlights: “Watching The River Flow” is a stretch at the best of times. “Girl From The North Country” is pretty meandering as well.

decision: Informational purposes only. I wanted to know what the current tour sounded like, and now I have a vague idea.
