Five terrible reasons not to listen to a song

“That’s just so lame.”
Be a snob about uncool bands if you want, I suppose. More for the rest of us.

“Those guys are such jerks.”
The difference between sullen, anti-social, greedy celebrities and celebrities who are “wonderful human beings” is that the wonderful ones spend more money on their PR firms. Certainly some rock stars are shallow and self-absorbed and some are kind-hearted and humble. But Entertainment Tonight and People Weekly aren’t going to help you decide which is which.

“I don’t listen to country.”
I don’t have much to say on this one. It’s like hating people who live in Iowa. A great punchline, for a certainty, but a lousy way to interact with the world.

“I’m so sick of hearing their other song.”
When people complain that a song is “overplayed,” I always like to suggest another possibility: Maybe the problem is that you listen to too much mind-numbing commercial radio. It’s bad enough to let someone else beam music into your head against your will. It’s even worse when you let that affect the choices you make when you actually do have a choice.

“musicreviewsnob.com said it was terrible.”
You know what they say opinions are like. If you didn’t listen to your mother when she told you not to start smoking, why would you listen to somebody you don’t know in New York or Chicago when they tell you not to listen to Modest Mouse?

Parallel universe where the Braves are contending

Ok, I will point this out exactly once, and will not speak of it again.

Bob Wickman has converted 15 of 16 save opportunities since coming to Atlanta.

Prior to that, the Braves had 20 blown saves.

If Wickman had been present, and had converted those 20 at that same rate, the Braves would have 18 more wins, and would be a half-game behind the Mets and the 3-game Mets / Braves series next week (at The Ted, no less) would be slightly more meaningful.

We now return to your regularly scheduled reality.

A pathetic week 2

Running-back-disguised-as-quarterback Vick went for only 92 yards and a TD passing, but broke off 127 and the other Falcons TD as the runner.  26 points is brilliant.  Vinatieri is always brilliant, contributing 13 points.  My Bench-riding QB, Alex Smith, would have had a respectable 15 points.  Unfortunately, no one else on my roster scored more than 9 and I got my hat handed to me.

Didn’t fare much better in the family league.  Hasselback is maybe not all he was cracked up to be at the beginning of the season.  1 TD against 2 INTs didn’t help matters any.  Everyone on that team underperformed as well.

pwned by the internets

48 hours without internet access. A new router (which needed to be bought anyway). Three calls to yell at hapless support drones at the cable company. Multiple configurations to figure out what the cause of the problem is.

The result? 3-foot stretch of co-ax cable: 1, Dad: 0.

Guh.

update 9/18: it wasn’t as fixed as I’d hoped.  Tech guy coming to the house today.

Yakko: killer instinct

Last year, it took Yakko the entire season. He recorded his only tackle of the year in the final game they played. This year, he matched his career high for tackles in a season in week 2. He’ll be the golden boy of the 5th and 6th grade draft next year, despite being slightly undersized.

All kidding aside, he did a very nice job on every down he played, staying on his man on offense, and (as I said) coming off his block to get the tackle in the 3rd quarter. They didn’t win, but they played tough. I loved the look in his eyes when he got done and said “Did you see that?!”

A Trek thought

I don’t have many of them. But this 40th anniversary business is getting me thinking about Matt Damon playing a “young” Kirk in a JJ Abrams-directed version of “Ultimate Trek” or whatever it’s going to be called.

Some facts for you (unless IMDB is wrong, which is always possible):

Damon: born 10-08-1970. he will be 36 (at least) when the new project films.
Shatner: born 03-22-1931. Unless my math is wrong, he was 35 in 1966 when Trek first started filming.

So to recap: We’re going to revive the franchise by showing “Young Trek” from before the original series happened. To do that, we’ve cast a guy as “Young Kirk” who is older than “Old Kirk” was in the original series.

I’m now done thinking about Trek, most likely until the 50th anniversary.

Week 1 winner

I won my family league game handily.  The family league (me, Yakko, our buddies, and some kids and dads from Yakko’s school) is kind of a crap shoot.  Since there are only 8 teams, we all have the cream of the NFL crop on our rosters, so it’s more about player performances than canny roster moves.  To give you an idea, the highest scoring team in that league this week is “Extra Team,” the team i added in to the draft in order to keep an even number.

My keeper league game was a lot more hairy. I got unexpected TDs from Mike Bell and Kevan Barlow, and my opponent had Carson Palmer on a down week.  Chester Taylor very nearly killed the week for me with a huge Monday night, but Eric Parker eked out just enough total yardage to let me squeak by, 108-103.

Appearances:  It appears Kellen Winslow might actually be as good as he’s supposed to be.  It appears that the Chargers’ strategy is all-Tomlinson-all-the-time. We’ll see how that works over the course of a season.  It appears Chester Taylor is the new Tomlinson, at least against a team like Washington.

This weeks most irresponsible parent award goes to…….

ME!!!!! I admit I screwed up. It’s Monday morning and I slept in (which I needed due to a stomach bug). Wacko and Dot have been great, playing together, eating all their breakfast, and just leaving me alone with my stomach. Then I talk to Poppa who asks why Wacko wasn’t in school. Oh my God, It’s monday morning and Wacko has school. We quickly threw the shoes on and flew out of the house. He still has one good hour of school. At least it’s only preschool, I wont have to deal with a principal. Of course he’s wearing his batman pj’s, but then he wore his spiderman ones for pictures lastyear. He did put them on this morning so he could play batman and Cyber girl with Dot. Now there’s only one thing to do….find a way to remember next week so this doesn’t happen again.
